About


Sean Steele is an educator, writer, musician, and academic currently based in Victoria, BC.  He holds an MA in the Humanities from York University, a BA in Philosophy and History from Concordia University, and a diploma in music (jazz studies) from Vancouver Island University.  Sean's PhD research explores the intersections of popular music, religion, and culture, and he is currently completing a dissertation through the Humanities Department at York University exploring music festivals as sites of secular sacrality.

 Sean’s other research interests include artistic expression and deep time, the intersections of spirituality, religion, ecology, and climate change, and alternative forms of liberal arts education. Most recently, Sean has been writing and presenting about the intersection of artistic expression and geology to stimulate reflections on deep time and climate change in the Anthropocene.

His scholarly writing has appeared in Arts and Humanities in Higher Education, the American Studies Journal, the Journal for Unschooling and Alternative Education, Rock Music Studies, the Journal for the Academic Study of Religion, and online through the International Association for the Study of Popular Music.

Sean is also a musician who has recorded several albums ranging in style from rock to ambient to experimental jazz. He has performed across Canada and the US with rock band Zuffalo.
